(Memphis) Memphis Police Association president Michael Williams is speaking out against a sales tax hike voters will decide on next week.
“We are recommending to our members not to support the half cent sales tax,” said Williams.
“We are for Pre-K, don’t want anybody to think we are not for Pre-K. We are going to turn $47 million dollars over to a civilian board that is appointed by the city administration. If we are going to have $47 million we feel it should be controlled by an elected party,” said Williams about the appointed Pre-K commission.
Mayor AC Wharton along with other supporters have been out pushing the message of what pre-k could do for our community in the past several weeks.
“We’re going to spend the money anyway. Either we spend it on the front end, where we can shape it for a positive purpose, or we spend it on jails teenage pregnancy all those things that are natural extensions of school dropout and failure,” said Wharton Sunday.
“We gave up the school charter, we wanted out of the education business. If in fact we start paying the $27 million are we going to be locked in like we were for the $57 million. So now we’ve committed to citizens once again even though we don’t want to pay the $57 million that we owe,” added Williams.
Early voting is happening now. Voters will decide November 21st.
