MEMPHIS, Tenn. — WREG is getting answers about what administrative charges Memphis Police officer Connor Schilling is facing.
The Memphis Police Department is charging Schilling with violation of the policy and procedures for handcuffing and radio procedures.
Memphis Police Association President Mike Williams said he’ll probably be one of the officers standing beside Officer Connor Schilling next week when the Police Department plans on deciding what, if any, punishment he should face for shooting and killing Darrius Stewart.
“It’s a lot surrounding this so he has a lot of critical decisions he has to make,” said Williams.
He told WREG Schilling told him the department served him for violating radio and handcuff procedures.
Williams said right now those are the only charges he knows of, but you never know.
“Anything can change. I have seen them change charges in a hearing.
He sad administrative hearings are common and said the punishment varies.
“From an oral reprimand all the way to a firing,” he told us.
But this case could be different.
“Because of the circumstances surrounding this, they may try to fire him,” Williams said.
Schilling made the traffic stop back in July on Hickory Hill.
Darrius Stewart, 19, was a passenger wanted on two felony warrants.
MPD said Stewart was in the back of a squad car when he attacked Schilling, at one point with his own cuffs.
That’s when Schilling shot him.
We asked Williams where the administrative charges against Schilling might come from.
“When you talk about radio communication either you didn’t call the dispatch or waited too long to call the dispatch,” he said.
As far as the handcuffing violation goes, Williams said he doesn’t know.
But he said anytime a suspect is transported they must be handcuffed.
“So they may say ‘well, why didn’t you handcuff him before you put him in the car?’ Well he wasn’t under arrest at the time neither though.”
Schilling is set to have his administrative hearing next week.
It’s private, but WREG will keep you updated with what happens.
