MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Memphis Police said officers are investigating a deadly shooting that happened early Saturday morning.

MPD said officers responded to a shooting in the 5200 block of Elmore, at Best Deal Auto Repair. One man was transported to Regional One Hospital in critical condition, where he was later pronounced dead.

Detectives have not released the motive behind the killing but believe the suspects may have gotten away in a white Chevy Impala.

MPD identified the victim as Gerald Stewart, 50, on Monday, several days after radio talk show host Bev Johnson told WREG the victim was a frequent guest on her show for her “Ask the expert” segment.

Johnson said Stewart was just on her show two days ago, and with a heavy heart, she said that he was a very nice person.

Those who work in the area only spoke highly of Stewart, and described him as a good, hardworking man who was well respected in the community.

And even those who had brief encounters with Stewart shared similar sentiments.

“Everybody that met him knew that he was a kindhearted, gentle person. Nice guy. I’m talking about he would give you the shirt off his back,” Marvin Wilhite, who works nearby, said.
