MPD: Man wildly fired shots while kids were playing feet away

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — For the second time this week, a neighborhood was shaken up when a mentally disturbed man fired shots from his porch.

This time, kids were across the street.

It happened on Tate Avenue Thursday around 4:45 p.m.

A dozen cops formed a barricade around the apartment, and quickly took the guy into custody.

Police said a guy armed with a shotgun stood on his front porch and fired round after round.

“Very scary. You see all these kids out here,” said one neighbor.

Police put the guy in the back of the squad car as they collected evidence.

They even took the American flag WREG is told waved behind him as he fired shots.

“I haven’t seen him in trouble like that,” said Cotillus Dotson who lives next door to the guy.

He knows him well, and said he’s a veteran in his 60s with a mental illness.

“He does a lot of weird stuff at times,” said Dotson.

Other neighbors said people provoke the man, and he probably got fed up.

“They done so much damage to him. It don’t make no sense,” said one neighbor who didn’t give her name. “They robbed him, broke into his house, and bust his windows out.”

Police haven’t said yet if the man was released or will face charges.

Thankfully, no one was injured.
