MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A Memphis Police officer died after being shot while conducting a traffic stop.
Police said the officer was conducting the stop near Cottonwood Road and Perkins Road when he was shot by a person in the vehicle.
Police received a call at about 9:15 p.m. Saturday that additional officers were needed in the area.
The officer who was shot was transported to Regional Medical Center in critical condition, but died not long after, police said.
The suspect is still at large, police said.
The officer’s name will not be released until next of kin is notified, MPD Director Toney Armstrong said at a news conference.
This officer is the first to die in the line of duty since Martoiya Lang was shot in December 2012.
