MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Police said a pedestrian was killed Saturday morning in a hit-and-run at Winchester and Goodlett in southeast Memphis.
The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene. The person responsible left before officers arrived.
While officers were investigating, they say another vehicle struck another pedestrian and crashed into a police squad car.
The second pedestrian refused medical treatment, while two officers were taken to a hospital in non-critical condition, MPD said.
Later in the day, MPD announced they arrested the 16-year-old male drive, who was located at the intersection of Emerald & Shirlington. MPD said he was charged with no driver’s license, financial responsibility and leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death.
MPD said the passenger Lidora Penaloza, 56, was also charged with leaving the scene of accident resulting in death and contributing to the delinquency of a minor. A source told WREG-TV, Penaloza, is the mother of the 16-year-old boy who was driving.
The pedestrian has been identified as Walter Gomez, 40.
Additionally, Memphis Police said the investigation revealed the pedestrian did not cross in the protected area.
But the story of Saturday morning’s crash does not end there. While on the scene, police said a woman approached officers saying she needed to talk to someone about a fight between her and her boyfriend.
Police reports said she was told to wait nearby until an officer was available, but the she got upset with officers, yelled at them, and then drove into a squad car with an officer inside.
MPD said the force of the collision caused the squad car to crash into another police car that ended up hitting a pedestrian, who was just asking officers for directions.
