MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Memphis Police detectives have sent 105 requests for indictments to the district attorney general regarding cases stemming from sexual assault kit testing since the Sexual Assault Kit Taskforce began going through a backlog of untested kits in fall 2013.
The indictments are for aggravated rape or rape of a child, both Class A felonies. Seven of these indictments have been sought in the past month.
The city has an inventory of 12,374 kits that date back to the 1970s. Just between January and June of this year, the percentage of untested kits dropped from 47 percent to 35 percent.
So far, this effort has led to 614 investigations, 73 percent of which are closed. Of the closed cases, 23 percent led to indictments.
