MPD reviews Tom Lee Park surveillance video to solve shooting

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The Memphis Police Department confirmed the surveillance cameras in Tom Lee Park were working over the weekend.

Investigators said they were reviewing the tapes to learn more about Sunday night’s shooting that sent a 17-year-old, 20-year-old, and 24-year-old three people to the hospital.

They went to the hospital in non-critical condition.

The shots rang out in Tom Lee Park just before 8 p.m.

“From what we know right now, it appears that it was an altercation between at least two individuals where several shots were fired, and it appears that some innocent people were shot,” said Police Director Toney Armstrong.

Runner Christine Beyke said she was not necessarily surprised to hear about another shooting in Memphis, but hearing about violence in the park is jolting.

“It’s just kind of one of those frustrating things, of like, really? Another place I thought was fine and safe that maybe I need to bring my fiancé with me, you know, just to go running,” she said.

The Riverfront Development Corporation said it was not in charge of surveillance cameras in the park; that duty falls to the Memphis Police Department.

Police have not announced any arrests.
