JACKSON, Miss. — The Mississippi Department of Health is shutting down nine clinics and shifting the hours of others effective February 1.
According to a release issued Wednesday, low patient turnout is the main reason the changes are having to be made.
“Like any other business, we’ve had to face the current environment and come up with a different way of doing business while continuing to provide core public health to all Mississippians,” said State Health Officer Dr. Mary Currier.
She added over the past few years patient turnout has decreased significantly due to patients having more options under the Affordable Care Act and Medicaid.
The closures will put 35 full time employees out of work along with 29 contract workers.
In addition, the MSDH will be making some changes to what each clinic offers.
They will no longer be enrolling new maternity patients, and services such as immunizations, family planning, WIC, the Perinatal Risk Management Program, and the Early and Periodic Screening, Diagnosis and Treatment Program will be provided on different days or hours.
