MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Three special-needs students are recovering after getting into a wreck Thursday morning on their bus ride to Shrine School.
The accident happened near Chuck Avenue and Perkins Road in Parkway Village around 7 a.m.
“When I heard the impact, I turned around and I saw the bus hit it down from where the bus is now,” said witness Bruce.
Bruce said he watched the school bus go over the curb off Perkins Road and onto the grass, barely missing a pole.
“The first thing I did was run to the bus and ask if there were any kids on the bus. They said, ‘Yes.’ I asked if anybody was hurt. They said, ‘No.’”
It’s not clear what led up to the crash, but police say three vehicles total were involved.
Neighbor Kierra Myers also ran out after hearing a loud noise but only saw a damaged black car in the road.
“By the time I got to the door, [the driver] was getting out,” she said. “He was looking like he was going to fall. He was holding his head.”
Durham School Services say three students, a driver, nurse and monitor went to the hospital.
You could see the students’ wheelchairs being taken from the scene.
Thankfully, everyone’s expected to be okay.
Neighbors say the intersection of Perkins and Chuck is dangerous.
“It’s always somebody getting into a wreck right here or about to wreck, every other day,” said Myers.
A city spokesperson said they’ve received complaints before and surveyed the area in 2014 for a traffic signal.
However, their study found it wasn’t needed under federal guidelines.
Neighbors hope this recent close call could change that.
“This is a horrific intersection. You need a traffic light at this intersection,” said Bruce.
