WEST MEMPHIS, Ark. — NBA player Sonny Weems was in town on Friday to give back to children in West Memphis, Arkansas.

For the past four years, Weems has sponsored a back to school backpack giveaway for students at West Memphis High School.

They were filled with supplies and were lovingly handed out to children of all ages.

“It’s very important to me that most kids have that kind of head start that most kids didn’t have,” he said. “By doing the basketball camp and now I’m doing the back to school giveaway. It’s just me doing my part.”

Weems said he hoped to inspire young people to go further, and actively works to promote the importance of reading and education.
