LINCOLN, Neb. — A kids’ nature day camp group found a mammoth tooth along a Nebraska creek last week.
Counselor Colleen Zajac found the tooth while the campers were wading in a muddy creek, according to the Lincoln Journal Star. The group sometimes digs for old animal bones, but it is usually just the remains of cows, bison and wolves that turn up.
Camp counselors said they believe the tooth unearthed itself after the flooding in the past months.
Paleontologists said the tooth is from a baby mammoth.
The Wilderness Park Nature Camp said it has not decided yet if the tooth will be offered to researchers for further examination, but until a decision is made, the fossil will remain with the campers.
Mammoths last roamed the planes of Nebraska about 10 thousand years ago.
