(Memphis) A cellphone-driven transportation company could take on Memphis cab companies.
The ride-sharing service called Lyft is posting ads on social media to see if it can drum up any interest.
Lyft is similar to a taxi-cab service, but it’s navigated through a free smartphone application.
You just request a ride, and Lyft pairs you with a driver nearby.
The San Francisco company calls it ride-sharing, because drivers use their own cars.
Aanyone older than 23 years old can sign up as long as you pass a background check and have insurance.
Lyft has been posting Facebook ads in Memphis.
A company spokesperson told WREG, “We are currently testing ads in 20 cities where Lyft is not operating, but we are interested in exploring,” and said right now, there’s no plans to launch in Memphis, but depending on feedback, that could change.
Lyft’s fares are not regulated by the city, because they don’t accept fares. They call it suggested donations, which allows them to get around having a commercial license.
Both Yellow Cab and Metro Cab said Lyft surges prices, drivers don’t carry proper insurance, and the vetting process isn’t strict enough.
