(CNN) Former South African President Nelson Mandela has been getting kidney dialysis while in the hospital for a recurring lung infection.

A source with direct knowledge to Mandela’s medical situation says the 94-year-old has been opening his eyes when people talk to him.

The source said Mandela, who is on life support, is not in a vegetative state. This comes after court documents released yesterday claimed that doctors advised the family to take Mandela off life support. However, South Africa’s current president maintains that Mandela is in critical but stable condition.
