New Team Coming To Help Trim DMV Wait Times

(Memphis) WREG gets action on trying to trim wait times at your driver service center.

Tuesday night at a Rotary Club meeting, DPS Commissioner Bill Gibbons told the crowd he’s sending in a special team to help with the wait time.

He even mentioned our WREG investigation about the problems that ran Monday night.

“We have created a special strike team,” Gibbons announced. “That strike team will go into those centers spend some time working with the managers to really see if we can identify some things that really apply to that center in particular that we can change and improve.”

He said the team was put together a couple months ago around the same time our WREG investigation uncovered an audit showing Memphis has the longest wait times in the state.

One of the worst centers was the one on Shelby drive.

“In January statewide it (wait time) was under 25 minutes. Shelby Drive it was 53 minutes,” he said.

That’s not even counting the time you spend waiting in this line to get your ticket to get service.

As we reported Monday night, we saw people in this first line for nearly an hour.

“That`s an example of something we need to work on,” he said.

He says one improvement they plan on making is working with customers while they stand in line for a ticket.

“Because what happens a lot of time is people will be in line for 30 minutes get a ticket and then find out they didn`t bring the right documents with them,” he said.

Changes he hopes will improve a situation he called ‘unacceptable.’
