NEWTOWN, Conn. — A middle school teacher was arrested after it was discovered he was carrying a gun while on campus.
Jason Adams, an eight-grade science teacher, was arrested and charged with possession of a weapon on school grounds.
Around 9 a.m. on Wednesday, teachers were taking part in staff development meetings when it was discovered Adams was carrying a gun.
Law enforcement responded to the scene and took him into custody.
He has since been released, but is expected to appear in court on April 20.
The school had a two-hour delayed opening due to the staff meetings, reported WCCT.
Adams does have a legal permit to carry a gun, but it is illegal to carry weapons on school property.
The 46-year-old was placed on leave.
The school district released the following statement:
“This matter is very serious and troubling. Both the Newtown Public School system and the Newtown Police Department took immediate steps to address this matter. The teacher was immediately detained by security personnel. The teacher has additionally been placed on administrative leave pending an administrative investigation. Both agencies have been working closely together to investigate the incident and are taking precautions to ensure the continued safety of our students, staff and community members.”
