MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A non-profit working with children in North Memphis has asked the public for help.
The van used to take kids to museums, church, summer camps, volunteer opportunities and even summer jobs and internships broke down.
Oasis of Hope told WREG they work with children to keep them out of trouble and help them academically and spiritually.
“It was like disappointing, because that’s the only van we had to get back and forth,” said Latonya Taylor, who goes to the Oasis of Hope Green House.
The van broke down right before school got out.
The repairs were too expensive to fix, so Oasis of Hope was forced to scrap it.
“Very frustrating, and it made my work load that much more difficult, because the needs of the children are still there,” said Martell Hixson, the youth developer.
He said the van was necessary for their summer plans.
He’s now forced to find volunteers to take kids where they need to go.
He’s worried having no transportation will impact the kids.
“The primary use for the vans was to get them out, expose them to world, connect them to new people and different types of opportunities,” said Hixson.
“We just need them. I pray to God we can get them,” said Taylor.
