BLYTHEVILLE, Ark. — Blytheville Public Schools declared a snow day on Thursday after around one to two inches of snow accumulated in the city overnight.
The area was expected to be one of the hardest hit in the Mid-South, causing many to rush to the stores beforehand.
“I remember a couple people coming in getting everything they need just in case, you know, they got snowed in,” said retail worker Philippians Foster.
Blytheville schools let out an hour early on Wednesday around 2 p.m. in order to prepare and maximize student safety.
It ended up being less snow than expected, but many said they can’t remember getting any snowfall this early in the year.
“Not that I can remember. If anything, the snow always was delayed.”
The city appeared ready for the weather, as snowplows and crews were out clearing the streets.
The freezing temperatures created icy roadways, leading Blytheville Schools to cancel classes on Thursday.
“You can never be too careful.”
Foster said she left early for work Thursday morning just in case but had no problems.
No major accidents were reported in the area Wednesday afternoon through Thursday morning.
“It was clear. I guess the people that shovel came out and got everything cleared.”
Clayton Cobbs said he was sent from Oklahoma to Blytheville to work on cell phone towers and kept his eye on the forecast.
“We’ve been here about a week now so we knew bad weather was coming, so we just had to prepare for it,” he said. “It’s cold and wet and makes everything just a little bit more difficult.”
