MEMPHIS, Tenn. — An off-duty Memphis firefighter was reportedly killed in a deadly shooting in Raleigh.
Mark C. Bond, 58, was reportedly shot and killed on Raleigh Lagrange on Wednesday, July 15. Memphis Police responded to the scene just before 3 p.m.
Marcus Jones works at On the Spot Xclusive Barbershop in the strip mall. He says he found Bond sitting in a car behind the building after someone ran into the shop and asked employees to call 911.
“It was three bullet holes on the side of the car,” Jones said, “He was sitting in his car but, you know, his head was down.”
Police believe Bond was shot at a different location before coming to the strip mall but investigators are still trying to figure out where it happened, who pulled the trigger and why.
Police have not released any suspect information in connection with this shooting.
Joe Norman is Vice President of the Memphis Firefighters Association. He worked with Bond for several years in the early 2000’s.
“We road the ambulance together… Two, three, four o’clock in the morning we’d been at it,” Norman said, “Not everybody’s in the best mood at two, three o’clock in the morning and this guy, he never complained.”
Norman can’t believe something like this happened to Bond. He worked with the fire department for more than 20 years.
“He was always a great guy, a fun guy,” Norman said, “No doubt was looking forward to retiring and enjoying the rest of his life after a career of protecting the public and for this to happen is just tragic.”
The Memphis Fire Department released a statement on Bond’s death, saying in part, “The Memphis Fire Department are deeply saddened to hear of the sudden and tragic off-duty death of firefighter Mack C. Bond. Mack faithfully served as a member of this department for over twenty-one (21) years and was a valued member of our MFD family.”
Fire officials were unable to tell WREG if Bond was married or if he had any children.
