MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A Memphis police officer was shot while off-duty working as a security guard.

Authorities said the officer received information early Tuesday morning that two males were seen prowling near vehicles on North Lauderdale near the I-40 underpass.

When the officer went to check the area he found a man breaking into a truck and yelled “police.” The suspect jumped in an older model black Pontiac and the driver took off.

The driver made a u-turn traveling southbound on Lauderdale and turned eastbound on Alabama before coming to a stop. That’s when someone fired a shot, striking the officer in the arm.

The officer was taken to the Regional Medical Center for treatment. He’s expected to be okay.

A family member identified him as David Tisdell, and said he worked for MPD and St. Jude. The family member said Tisdell was in good spirits and was up and talking.

The suspects have not been arrested but authorities said they broke into multiple cars in the area.

The crime scene is near St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Authorities said at no point were the suspects on campus and no one on campus was ever in any danger.

WREG was told by different sources that the officer was working as a security guard for the hospital at the time of the shooting.

Memphis Police said Tuesday evening they would be offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to a suspect of officer Tisdell’s shooting.
