MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A Memphis Police officer who was investigating an accident Saturday night was struck by a vehicle on Interstate 40 near Sycamore View.

Memphis Police said the officer was at the scene of the crash at I-40 eastbound west of Sycamore View around 9 p.m. when the officer was hit by a vehicle not involved in the accident.

Police said the officer who was struck was taken to Regional One Hospital in critical condition.

Sunday morning, police said the officer was listed in non-critical condition. The driver who hit the officer was issued a traffic citation for Obedience to Device and Financial Responsibility Law.

“We should continue to pray for this officer and his family as he recovers from the injuries,” Memphis Mayor Jim Strickland said on Twitter.

All eastbound lanes were closed while police investigated both crashes. Just before 10 p.m., police began opening some lanes of traffic.
