TUNICA, Miss. — An armed robbery of a bank in Greenville, Mississippi ended with a police pursuit and a shootout between officers and the suspect  Wednesday.

Greenville Police say they responded to Southern Bancorp on Highway 1 South at 11:30 a.m., where an employee told officers the bank had just been robbed of an undisclosed amount of money by a man with a handgun.

The man ran toward the rear of a Kroger, the employee told police, and then made a getaway in a maroon Chevrolet SUV. An alert for the vehicle was broadcast to local law enforcement agencies.

The Cleveland, Mississippi Police Department spotted the suspect’s vehicle and began a pursuit that ended in Tunica.

Greenville Police said gunfire was exchanged between the suspect and Cleveland officers.

The unidentified suspect was taken to a hospital in Memphis, police said. There were no injuries reported from the bank.

Highway 61 south of Highway 4 in Tunica County was closed while authorities investigated the scene Wednesday afternoon.
