Officer pictured sleeping in patrol car has history of suspensions, reprimands

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A Memphis police officer who slept on the job is getting a lot of attention.

Officer Laneeze Stepney is being investigated after a picture of what appeared to be him sleeping in his patrol car surfaced on the internet.

We dug through his personnel file and found out he has been suspended 26 times and has two reprimands and this wasn’t his first time napping in a patrol car.

Back in August 2011 officer Laneeze Stepney used a police car to take nap at the Old Allen Police Station while he wasn’t on duty.
He was suspended for two days

Back in May 2001 he was in violation for not being truthful after he was called to the home of an officer for a domestic disturbance call.  During the investigation, he told the officer he could leave the scene after getting orders from a commanding officers.  When questioned about the incident, he lied. Stepney was given a reprimand and a one day suspension because of this.

He was also suspended for 16 days for his conduct and excessive force during an incident in August 2001 where he didn’t arrest gambling suspects, instead forcing the person who complained about them out of their car and macing them.

And in April 2001 he got a call from sister who said her husband beat her.  He went to the address she gave him while on duty and intimidated two relatives at the home. Records say he also threatened them after they said they would file a complaint.

Stepney was written up and suspended for one day.

It’s still unclear why he was asleep in a patrol car earlier this week.
