HATTIESBURG, Miss. — The 13-year-old daughter of a fallen Hattiesburg Police Officer was laid to rest on Wednesday.

Melah Deen was the daughter of Benjamin Deen, one of two police officers who were killed during a traffic stop back in May.

Just six months later, the family lost Melah after complications with a virus, reported The Clarion-Ledger.

Since that night, members of the Hattiesburg Police Department and Lamar County Sheriff’ Office have worked to honor a vow they made to the fallen officer to always look after his family.

Each day the HPD stood watch over the teen, and then when they left, the Deputies would take over for the night.

They simply stated they didn’t want her to be alone.

“It’s a brotherhood,” Lamar County Sheriff Danny Rigel told the Clarion-Ledger. “We all worked with him, and we just feel like he’s not here to watch over his family and that’s what we’re here for.”

Melah was laid to rest Wednesday next to her father.
