MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A young man is safe and home with his family after the car he was in was stolen.

Memphis Police say the child’s mother left the car running while she was inside the Goodwill on Stage Road in Raleigh around 4:30 Wednesday evening.

“Losing your car is one thing, but losing your child is another,” a resident said.

That’s when a man jumped inside of the car and took off while the child was asleep in the back seat.

“People are watching for people to make stupid mistakes, like leave their car running or just running in and out. People are watching for that,” the resident said.

The suspect drove for 15 minutes before he let the child out of the car on Harvester Street in Frayser.

He’s on the run.

Police released surveillance video of the suspect in hopes of identifying him.

They tell us there is never a reason to leave your car running. They say, this is happening way too often city wide.

“It’s sad that our world has no care for lives. It’s sad that we as people have no responsibility for things that matter to us, because I know now she is probably extremely hurt. She could have lost her child,” the resident said.

This is an ongoing investigation.
