(Memphis) If you enjoy thrifting, or plan to head out to a yard sale this weekend, make sure you don’t waste your money on an unsafe product.
Second hand stores are supposed to check to see if an item has been recalled before selling it. However, we discovered that doesn’t always happen.
The On Your Side Investigators checked out several thrift stores for recalled children’s products.
While the overwhelming majority of the stores didn’t seem to be selling recalled products, we did find two recalled items in one store.
We found a stroller made by Peg Perego recalled last July, selling for $95 at Once Upon a Child in Cordova.
We also found this bath seat made by Summer Infant that was recalled in August of 2012.
So how do you know if something’s been recalled when you’re about to buy it?
The key is to do your research ahead of time. Check out saferproducts.gov.
You can search by category, recently recalled products and even by brand.
Parents should also stay away from car seats, because of the potential accident history.
Child safety seats also have a shelf life. The expiration date should be embedded on the seat itself.
WREG talked to a representative from Once Upon a Child. She says they keep a binder with recently recalled products in the store and always cross reference before selling an item. She says she’s not sure how the recalled items were tagged for sale.
