HORN LAKE, Miss. — Fake cash keeps popping in to DeSoto Cleaners in Horn Lake.
“I’ve had a 100, a 20, a 10 and a 5,” clerk Barbara Matheny said. “They come in here and think I just do this. They don’t know my history and where I worked.”
She used to work at a bank and has extensive training on counterfeit cash.
“For me it’s the color,” she said. “I can tell with the color, and the feel is different.”
It’s not just a problem at the cleaners, but all across the Mid-South.
Covington Police said they were looking for Jimi Rumsey, who they said passed fake $20s at Walmart.
A Secret Service agent told WREG in April 2014 that with the advent of desktop publishing, it’s relatively common.
The agent said counterfeiting is becoming a bigger problem, and everyone has to be on guard and know what to look for.
“Color-changing ink, the liberty bill that changes and this plastic strip,” he pointed out.
It’s the only way Matheny caught the fake cash, and it came from people she knew and trusted.
However, they didn’t know it was a fake when they got it.
She said it serves as a lesson to all of us: The fake bills are out there, and not just the big bills. You have to be on the lookout.
