SOUTHAVEN, Miss. — The Southaven Police Department issued an alert for people to be on the alert for a scam that has recently shown up in the area.

According to Lt. Mark Little, several people have received calls from someone speaking broken English.

The person told the victims they were with the IRS, and local law enforcement were on the way to their homes with a warrant for their arrest for failing to pay past taxes.

The only way to stop the process, they claimed was to send them the money to pay it off.

The victim would then be instructed to pay the amount with a credit card or by sending the money via Moneygram or a Western Union location.

Officials with the IRS said they will never call a person like this.

If you receive a similar call, you are urged to write down the number, hang up and call your local police department.
