JACKSON, Miss. — The Mississippi State Department of Health confirmed two new human cases of West Nile virus, both in Madison County.

This makes a total of 13 cases so far this year. The total will only rise, as August and September see the majority of cases,  state epidemiologist Dr. Thomas Dobbs said.

Last year, there were 43 cases, and seven people died as a result of the virus.

West Nile virus symptoms include fever, headache, nausea, vomiting, a rash, muscle weakness or swollen lymph nodes, according to the MSDH. Symptoms are usually mild, but in some cases, infection can lead to encephalitis or meningitis, causing paralysis, coma or death.

The MSDH  gives the following advice to ward off potentially disease-carrying mosquitoes and stay healthy:

  • Use a recommended mosquito repellent that contains DEET while you are outdoors.
  • Remove all sources of standing water around your home and yard to prevent mosquito breeding.
  • Wear loose, light-colored, long clothing to cover the arms and legs when outdoors.
  • Avoid areas where mosquitoes are prevalent.
