MEMPHIS, Tenn. — One person is dead following a violent crash in North Memphis early Monday morning.
The accident happened around 2:15 a.m. on Chelsea Avenue near Carpenter Street.
Police said a vehicle crashed into a building, causing it to collapse and catch fire.
One person inside the vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene.
Witnesses told WREG there may have been a second car involved, but police have not confirmed that.
One of the owners of the building said they learned about the crash from us.
“I’m looking at the news as usual and Channel 3 and I see it and say ‘That’s my building.'”
Diane Garrett has owned the building for 20 years and said this is the second time it has been hit by a car.
It’s been vacant just two weeks and she was supposed to shot it to a potential tenant this morning.
After seeing the damage, she said she’s not sure what she’ll do now.
“And I heard someone got killed,” she added.
Which she said makes this even more tragic.
