One Found Dead in Apartment Fire

(Memphis) The Memphis Fire Department says one man was found dead in a burning apartment in Berclair Tuesday morning.

Flames were reported around 6 a.m. in the Waring Park Apartment located 4400 block of Powell Drive in the Berclair area.

Terry Neal made it home to hear the news, ” Aww man. I’m (going to) miss him.

“He’s a nice guy,” Neal said. “I mean the kind of person I’d like to be when I get that age.”

“An off duty firefighter saw the smoke and located and contacted the fire department nearest to this structure,” Lt. Wayne Cooke, spokesperson for the Memphis Fire Department, said.

It didn’t take long for firefighters to make it to the apartment complex because there is a fire station right across the street.

Crews got the fire under control in ten minutes, but not before the flames could spread.

“There are approximately four units that sustained smoke, fire, and water damage,” Lt. Cooke said.

The damage left one family without somewhere to lay their heads.

As smoke continued to linger, neighbors hung around to hold each other close after losing one of their own.

It is not clear whether or not the unit had working fire alarms or how the fire started.
