MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A man is dead and another is severely injured after an overnight house fire in North Memphis.

The 1300 block of Nicholas Street in North Memphis was quiet Saturday morning.

Those living in the area continued their day as normal.

However, the smell of smoke lingered in the air.

It’s a sad reminder of the events that unfolded the night before.

Just after midnight, a Nicholas Street home, once filled with laughter and life, was reduced to ash and rubble.

Neighbors said a fire viciously demolished the home, forever changing the lives of those who called this their home.

According to the Memphis Fire Department, investigators determined that the fire was caused by unattended candles.

MFD said one person was taken to the Regional One Burn Center in critical condition.

Sadly, another individual who was in the home died as a result of the fire.

Friends of both victims said there was a third person inside, but she made it out safely.

A man visiting the area told WREG that he’s heartbroken for those close to the victim.

“I hope that the Lord soothes the family members,” Robert Joseph-Murray said. “Losing a loved one is devastating.”
