MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A South Memphis gas station turned into a crime scene Thursday morning when a man went there for help after being shot in the leg by another man.

The victim ended up at the Hop Inn on Horn Lake Road near West Raines Road, but police say the shooting happened less than a mile away at East Fairway Avenue and South 3rd Street around 5:30 a.m.

“He wasn’t screaming or nothing, so I didn’t know he had been shot. I just saw his pants rolled all the way up way up to the top of his – above his kneecap,” said Darren Rush, who works at the gas station.

Rush was cleaning the store when the victim came in for help.

Within minutes, he said police showed up and began questioning a woman in the back of a patrol car.

“By that time, the police was pulling up and the ambulance came. They took him and they put the girl in the back of the car,” he said. “I guess she might be a witness, you know she could tell them more or something.”

Rush said the pair pulled up in a shot-up car, which detectives focused on during their investigation.

For Rush, he said it was just another day in South Memphis.

“It happens all the time around here. It happens all the time,” he said.

Something he and others in the neighborhood have sadly gotten used to.

“Don’t want to, but we have to,” he added.

Two of Rush’s brothers were murdered in Memphis less than a decade apart – in 1989 and 1998. Now, he has a message not only for the criminals, but also for lawmakers.

“Stop the killing,” he said. “And I don’t know why they made a law where they can tote these guns like they tote. I don’t understand it. They can walk in the store – they walk in the store with their guns on them all the time. We don’t even know if they’re fixing to rob us when they come in like that.”

Police say the victim is expected to be OK.

No suspect has been taken into custody, and investigators haven’t released a description or any details about the gunman.
