MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Memphis in May organizers, parking companies, and police encouraged festival attendees to use caution when parking downtown this weekend.

There were some signs downtown warning customers to pay machines in parking lots as opposed to people.

Some scammers pretend to be parking attendants and pocket customers’ cash.

WREG spoke with Josh Cotter from Cordova who said he was familiar with the scam.

“A lot of people are trying to get money and ask for money. So, I try to pay attention to that and make sure they actually have the logo for the parking place on them,” Cotter said.

Police recommended the same thing.

In a statement, MPD said, “The attendants should have identification or uniforms relative to the parking facility. If citizens are unsure then they should park at an alternate location.”

WREG spoke with a representative at Republic Parking who also recommended checking an attendant’s name tag.

If customers were unsure about his or her legitimacy, they should ask for the parking office’s phone number.

Memphis in May organizers suggested festival goers carpool or take Uber.

They said MATA was also offering shuttle services.
