(Memphis) Overton Square is now more than 90 percent occupied with businesses.
This week, Loeb Properties leased the last big restaurant space. The Old Paulette’s is now turning into Schweinehaus, a German restaurant.
The building is currently under renovation, but by the end of Summer, it’s going to be serving up pretzels, bratwurst, and lots of beer.
Overton Square is buzzing with construction. Workers are revamping eight spaces for new tenants, five of which will be new restaurants.
“Robata right here, Babalu Tacos and Tapas across the street, Lafayette’s,” said Aaron Petree, the vice president of brokerage for Loeb Properties.
Schweinehaus may be the last restaurant to land at Overton Square.
Petree says Loeb Properties is now looking for retailers to give visitors places to shop when they come out to eat.
“We are hoping to make it a very unique place that Memphis can be proud,” said Petree.
He says just five retail spots are left on this corner of Midtown that once was barren.
Overton Square’s growth has come over the last two years since Loeb Properties took over.
It even built a 451 space garage to accommodate all the people now making Overton Square a destination.
“I was on Google street view and the street view was from a couple of years ago and when you’re here every day you don’t see the transformation but when you see it two years ago, it’s really come along way,” said Petree. “A lot more color. A lot more life. A lot more activity.”
Come spring, the buzz of construction will transform into buzzing of people, coming to enjoy hamburgers, tacos, and sushi, with some shopping in between.
Overton Square says it’s looking to fill the remaining five spaces with unique, boutique-type shops.
