Oxford School District receives national honor

OXFORD, Miss. — The Oxford School District was one of 14 schools in the nation recognized for its work to lessen its impact on the environment.

According to the release, the school was named a 2015 U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon School District Sustainability Awardee, and was honored at a ceremony in Washington, D.C.

The Mississippi Department of Education nominated the school district for the award.

In order to qualify, the state had to prove the school district had reduced their environmental impact, created a healthy learning environment and given students the opportunity to participate in real-world sustainability education.

“Our school district is ensuring that our students learn to live, work and play with sustainability and health in mind, not as an afterthought, but as an integral part of everything they undertake from cradle to career,” said Superintendent Brian Harvey.

After the ceremony, school officials had the opportunity to meet with congressional members and other award winners.
