MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Some parents said they don’t feel safe letting their children walk to school because of blight and lack of sidewalks, a problem in some parts of Frayser and Raleigh.

Egypt Central Road between Singleton Parkway and Raleigh Millington Road is a busy area with nonstop traffic. A lot of kids who live in the community walk to school with no sidewalks to use.

Although some areas have sidewalks, school board member Stephanie Love said it is not enough to keep students safe.

“We even have sidewalks where the blight, so many weeds and trees overhanging that the children have no choice but to walk in the street,” she said.

Some areas near MLK College Prep do not have sidewalks either. When kids walk near Steele Street and Corning Avenue, they walk in the street.

“It’s putting them in danger when they have kids going to school every morning,” community activist Charlie Caswell said.

Love said she contacted Mayor AC Wharton about the issue. She said sidewalks were built in one area in Frayser, but she’s working to get more.
