MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Monday, Memphis Police arrested Michael Dean for a robbing a 66-year-old woman and her son this past Saturday.
Dean reportedly held the woman’s son at gunpoint and stole her purse in the Walgreen’s parking lot on Kirby Parkway.
According to police, this was a crime of opportunity.
Officers said the 66-year-old woman was in her car in the parking lot when an elderly man bumped her vehicle.
As the two exchanged information, the suspect approached and asked if they were okay.
The woman said they were fine, but what she didn’t know was the suspect had gone to the passenger side of her car and pulled a gun on her son.
He told the son to not say a word as he took the purse.
After the victim drove away police say her son told her what happened and they immediately called police.
Officers said security cameras captured the man leave the Walgreen’s in a gold Toyota Camry.
Customers told WREG they hear about crime elsewhere in the city, but not around here.
“Recently in Raleigh and Frayser. You think well ‘I’m glad I’m out here,’ but when you hear it out here it kinda brings it close to home,” said customer Darrell Early.
Early said the crime made him think of his family.
“Mom, daughters you know and they frequent this Walgreen’s a lot.”
Other customers said this was a sad reminder to always have your guard up.
“If something happens like that it’s best just to sit in your car until police come,” said customer Bill Smith.
