MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Two firefighters were injured in a crash on I-240 Sunday morning, police say.
Memphis Police responded to a call around 3 a.m. and found a pedestrian had been struck by a vehicle at I-240 and Norris.
The person was taken to Regional One Hospital in critical condition. Two others were also taken to local hospitals but were in noncritical condition.
The Memphis Fire Department later confirmed that two firefighters were injured while responding to a car wreck. The firefighters were taken to the hospital in non-critical condition.
The Memphis Firefighters Association said one of the firefighters suffered a broken leg.
The driver, identified as 48-year-old Reginald McKenzie, was later arrested. MPD said the driver remained on the scene.
McKenzie is expected in court Monday morning on multiple charges.
Police say he was driving in an emergency lane when his car plowed into the paramedics and their ambulance Sunday. According to court records, McKenzie admitted to having several drinks hours before the crash. Those records also show he’s been charged with at least three DUIs since 2005.
McKenzie has been charged with DUI, failure to stop for emergency vehicles, reckless driving, and failing to exercise due care.
Fire Chief Gina Sweat said on a Facebook post, “Seriously Memphis drivers, it is ridiculous that you continue to crash into our Fire & EMS apparatus but when you seriously injure our 1st responders it is unforgivable. Slow down and move over so we can do our jobs without fear of being assaulted by your vehicles.”
