People in South Memphis say the thought of 15-year-old killing a teen is tough to comprehend

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — People in South Memphis say the thought of a teen killing a teenager is hard to comprehend.

A 15-year-old boy was charged with first-degree murder Wednesday for the death of a 15-year-old girl in Foote Homes this past Sunday.

“A child and both of them a child. That’s just ridiculous,” said Tasha Harvey who lives in Foote Homes.

Harvey said she will never understand why the young girl was shot and killed by a teenager in the apartment complex.

“He was 15-years-old. I don’t know what to say about that. It’s kind of weird,” she said.

The suspect was taken to Juvenile Court.

Police said the young victim was sitting on an air conditioner unit at Foote Homes Sunday night when she was shot in a drive by shooting.

“It could have been anybody’s kids. Wrong thing to be doing out here in these streets,” said James Williams.

People who live in Foote Homes told WREG they hope Sunday night’s shooting serves as a wake up call.

They said lack of positive activities in their community results in violence.

“They need to stop the violence around here. It’s too much going on around here, it really is, you got kids walking around in neighborhoods and it’s just a shame though,” Harvey said.

Police said it’s possible the shooting may be connected to another shooting that happened earlier in which another man was shot in the middle of a fight.

That man showed up at the hospital seeking treatment.

Some people told us they’re used to hearing about teens shooting there.

“They shoot every other day,” Harvey said.

Memphis Police said the decision regarding if the teen will be charged as an adult or teen is determined by the courts.
