MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Police said they released a person of interest in connection with the shooting of 33-year-old Officer Sean Bolton.

The person of interest, which police later revealed to be the driver of the car Bolton had pulled over, had turned himself in after having fled the scene originally. Police said no charges have been filed at this time, and the driver was released.

Bolton was conducting a traffic stop when he was fatally wounded.

Police said a civilian used the officer’s radio to call for police after he was shot near Cottonwood Road and Perkins Road.

The military veteran was shot multiple times by one of the individuals in the car. He was taken to Regional Medical Center in critical condition, where he later died.

Bolton’s death marks the 72nd death of an MPD officer in the line of duty.
