(Memphis) One of the nation’s largest pet food retailers says it will stop selling dog and cat treats made in China.
PetSmart plans to have the treats off all of its store shelves by March 2015.
Rival company Petco announced Tuesday it will remove all Chinese-made treats from its 1,300 stores by the end of this year, after shoppers pushed them to do so.
It’s all due to the ongoing fears that the treats are making pets sick and even killing them.
Investigators at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration haven’t been able to prove the treats made in China are making pets ill.
However, over the last seven years, the government agency has gotten nearly 5,000 complaints of pet illnesses.
Plus, there have been more than 1,000 reports of dog deaths after eating Chinese-made chicken, duck or sweet potato jerky treats.
