PHOENIX — It’s common knowledge when flying — pilots will never return to the gate to pick up anyone who didn’t make it on board.

But one pilot made an exception for a family who was desperate in a tough time, KSAZ reported.

The Short family was traveling from Phoenix to Memphis, Tennessee, to attend their father’s funeral, but after their flight was delayed in Phoenix, they only had 10 minutes to make their connecting flight when they arrived in Minneapolis. If they didn’t make the flight, they would miss the funeral.

When they got to the gate, the plane was already starting to taxi toward the runway. The family was in tears, with Rick Short screaming and waving his hands to try to get the pilot’s attention.

“The lady got on the phone and said there was nothing they could do, that the tower wasn’t going to let them pull back in and my sisters and mom…sitting there in tears and I’m screaming through the glass…all of a sudden, another phone call,” Short told KSAZ.

Luck was in their favor — this Delta pilot had a heart of gold and went back to get them.

The pilot said he heard the family was on their way to a funeral and saw their tears, sadness and desperation.

“It’s very rare…someone stops and does something so kind,” Short said. “We need more people like that in the world.”
