(Memphis) Memphis police say a man evicted from an apartment in Southeast Memphis got payback by damaging a number of apartments.

It happened over the weekend in the 3900 block of New Willow Road.

Police say they caught 23-year-old Merez Barnett destroying a wall in one apartment and discovered he had kicked in the front doors of several other apartments and broken about thirty windows.

“I got a call Saturday morning about 9am from a tenant saying that this fella had been in here at work since about 3am,” said Peter Wofford.

Wofford, who owns the apartment complex, said Barnett’s mother was kicked out of her apartment about two months ago and that Barnett had been squatting there ever since.

He says Barnett was likely upset because he kicked him out and threw his belongings in the dumpster, “I figured he was going to come back and break in that vacant apartment. I figured that was going to happen, but I certainly never envisioned this kind of damage.”

Barnette is charged with aggravated burglary, vandalism of $1,000-$10,000, and criminal trespass.

He is being held on $25,000 bond.
