MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The man who escaped from MPD detectives at Tillman Station last week is now back behind bars.
23-year-old Randy Rodgers was arrested Wednesday evening in Raleigh after a foot chase near Hawkins Mill & Frayser-Raleigh Road.
Police say they got a tip that Rodgers was in a white Chevrolet Impala.
When they tracked the vehicle down, police say Rodgers ran into the woods. An officer reported seeing a gun in Rodgers’ rear pants pocket.
A chopper and K9 officers searched for Rodgers. Police found him in about 45 minutes.
They found him hiding in a garbage can in the 3700 block of Longmont Dr. He was no longer handcuffed.
The woman who lives at the home told WREG she does not know Rodgers. She said she was shocked. She was not home at the time of the arrest.
“Looked like the whole force out here on them,” said Andra Thompson, who lives next door to where Rodgers was found.
Police had been looking for Rodgers since last Thursday when he escaped from officers who were questioning him about an attempted burglary case.
MPD did not share much detail about how Rodgers got away but said he shoved two detectives and ran. They had taken him outside for a cigarette.
WREG asked if MPD is examining safety procedures in light of this incident. A public information officer said, “They are being evaluated.” MPD said there is not video surveillance of the escape.
Rodgers is now facing aggravated assault and evading arrest charges in addition to attempted burglary.
Police also arrested 21-year-old Takayla Hayes, who was in the car with Rodgers.
She’s charged with accessory after the fact after reportedly trying to distract police so Rodgers could get away.
Rodgers is a felon, because he plead guilty to aggravated burglary in 2011.
