MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A Memphis father was arrested after police learned he rammed one of their vehicles and led them on a high speed chase with an unrestrained child in the back seat.
Thursday Kim Hill saw plenty of action near her home on Royal Elm Cove.
“Officers started getting out of the car, dressed for something bad, it looked like. They had on their body armour and guns,” Hill said.
Shelby County Deputies and U.S. Marshals finally were able to put the cuffs on 33-year-old Clyde Harris.
The mayhem started around noon Thursday at this house on Driftwood Street in Frayser, where lawmen went looking for the fugitive.
Wanted on a federal warrant for violating his parole deputies Harris jumped into a 1999 Lexus a sped away unbelievably with a four year girl in the back seat.
Harris led authorities on a chase down Frayser Boulevard striking one of the patrol cars but managing to get away.
He ended up on Royal Elm Cove, where it’s believed he has family ties.
During the entire episode the 4-year-old was neither restrained or in a car seat.
Harris is charged with aggravated assault, child abuse and child endangerment. The 4 year old was not injured.
No one was home Thursday at the Driftwood address.
Hill is glad the youngster wasn’t hurt but is sad for the way her community has changed.
“I’ve lived in this neighborhood forty years and it’s just going down the tubes,” Hill said.
Harris is still locked up in the Shelby County Jail.
