MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Memphis police say Friday was the first day this year officers have responded to the home where a man reportedly killed two of his children before killing himself.
Abel Gomez, 42, is accused of fatally shooting his 24-year-old son and wheelchair-bound 6-year-old daughter.
An 11-year-old boy was able to escape the home.
Police say a woman had fled the home to call for help. When police arrived, Gomez allegedly shot at officers, though the bullets didn’t hit them.
Then Gomez shot himself.
DCS said it has had no contact with the Gomez family.
A person claiming to be a friend of the family said no one saw the violence coming.
An internet search suggests Gomez ran a roofing business from his home.
Neighbors expressed their sympathy for the surviving family members Monday.
Just be happy from here on out. Don’t let it take them down and lose their mind,” said neighbor Jabari Walker.
