MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Memphis police have launched an investigation into a deadly accident in the airport area.

The eastbound lanes of Shelby Drive were temporarily closed between Airways Boulevard and Boeingshire Drive early Thursday morning.

According to police, 70-year-old Tom Ervin was stuck by a tractor trailer while in a wheelchair. He was rushed to the hospital in critical condition where he later died.

The incident happened near a Valero gas station. Employees say the didn’t know Ervin by name, but they say he was a double amputee who would visit a few times a week.

“I’m not the kind of person who is nosy, but I watch him. He doesn’t make trouble in the store,” an employee said.

The driver stayed on the scene until police arrived.No charges have been filed at this time, police said.
