Shooting outside Amazon leaves employee dead: Reports

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Police say a man was shot and killed outside the Amazon distribution center in the Airport Area Thursday night.

Officers were called to the scene on Holmes Road and Tchulahoma Road around 8 p.m., but have not released any information about what led up to the shooting.

The victim was identified by Amazon as an employee at the distribution center. He was pronounced dead on the scene.

Investigators are looking for a male between the ages of 20-30 years old wearing black clothing.

“We’re deeply troubled by this terrible incident and doing what we can to support our employee’s family and our team. This is an active investigation, and we’re cooperating with the Memphis Police Department so we defer further comment to them at this time,” said Amazon spokesperson Steve Kelly in a statement.

A woman we spoke to who works at the facility says she got off work moments before shots rang out.

“10 minutes after I left, I got messages on Facebook. People started calling me asking me was I alright,” said the woman.

Kelly says a shelter-in-place was put into effect immediately after the incident and was held until staff received the all-clear from MPD. All employees were later sent home and the next shift was canceled. All employees received pay for canceled shifts.

Despite the precautions, employees say they are still on edge knowing they don’t know what led to those fatal shots.

“I know some people that were here last night and they were scared for their life,” said the friend of an Amazon employee.

Amazon says counseling resources will be available to anyone who needs them.
