MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Memphis police are investigating a deadly shooting near a Whitehaven convenience store.

Investigators say a man was shot to death just before 10 p.m. Wednesday on Eastwind Drive, near the T&A Market.

Police still haven’t caught the killer.

People who live in a nearby apartment complex described hearing the gunshots.

“I heard like five or six back to back,” one woman, who wanted her identity concealed, told WREG.

The area has been a hotbed of violence over the years.

In 2017, two men were charged with murder after a man was shot and killed outside the same convenience store.

“They need to shut it down ’cause there’s something always happening up there,” that woman said. “There’s fights and somebody getting shot, they selling drugs in and out this store.”

And just a few yards away sits the Peppertree Apartments, where WREG has covered countless shootings over the years.

Last month, two men were shot there and one died.

Two men have been charged in the deadly shooting, but police haven’t announced an arrest in the other case.

“Me waking up and hearing gunshots. That’s not normal,” one man who lives at the Peppertree Apartments said. “I can come ask here and ask the hood where the shots came from and find out quicker than police.”

And last year, two people were killed in four separate shootings at the complex.

The Shelby County District Attorney’s office has been watching the property for years.

Neighbors were too afraid to show their faces on camera, but tell WREG the crime has gotten out of control.

“That ain’t nothing but a crime scene to me up there. I don’t like it,” one woman said.

She says she hides out in her apartment when she hears gunshots, praying bullets don’t come flying into her home.

“In this type of environment, in these days, that’s how you have to be,” she said. “So, to keep myself protected, I don’t deal with nobody. I deal with myself.”

Police haven’t released the name of the man killed in Wednesday’s shooting.

They say the suspect was wearing dark clothes and red shoes, but didn’t give a more detailed description.
